A couple of weeks ago, I saw someone on Twitter post that buying books and reading books should be two separate interests and it got me thinking.
I’ve always been a voracious reader, but I’ve read much less the last couple of years. Over that time, I’ve been spending more of my free time writing or working on book marketing and it hasn’t left as much space in my brain for other people’s stories. But I’ve never stopped buying new books, both hard copies and e-books.
Buying books makes me feel good. The book shop is a safe space, a doorway to countless other worlds. Whenever I’m having a bad day at work, I visit the book shop at lunchtime and make a purchase. It doesn’t matter how many unread books I have, I’ll always buy more. I’m a sucker for a Kindle deal, especially if it’s for a book I’ve wanted to read for a while.
Having books around me is comforting and magical. I’m not sure I’ll ever be able to read them all.
The last few weeks have been great, because I’ve finally found my reading mojo again. I’ve read new books, books whose crowdfunding campaigns I supported years ago, even one that had been lingering on my Kindle for longer than I can remember. I’m hoping to read more.
After all, I’ve got shelves full of books to get through, and new worlds to explore.
